Introduction to Northeastern University

Located in the Fenway Cultural District of Boson, Massachusetts, Northeastern University established in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men at the Boylston Street YMCA. The school dealt primarily with Boston's growing immigrant population.

By 1913, the school changed locations and offered more classes. In 1935, a liberal arts college was added, prompting the name change to Northeastern University. Since then, the university has added professional and continuing studies, health sciences, education, computer science and criminal justice.

Student Life at Northeastern University

Northeastern University's rigorous academic curriculum has students work with experiential learning and cooperative education. The school is well known for a cooperative education program, in which students combine real-world experience and academics by finishing eight semesters of full-time study and three semesters of paid full-time work.

Each year, students work with co-op employers from across the country. Students participate in various clubs and organizations, including Greek life and intramural sports teams. Northeastern University competes in NCAA Division I athletics in the Colonial Athletic Association.
